Round 1 Post for Future ReferenceShow
ROUND 1 FOR NOMINATIONS ENDS MARCH 15. ROUND 2 FOR VOTING PROPER WILL RUN THROUGH THE END OF MARCH.

Anything that is both nominated and seconded during Round 1 will be eligible for the final ballot. Depending on what is nominated, I will create additional categories at that time (best boxset, best label, best release by label, etc.). In this first post I will keep a running tally of everything that has been made eligible for the final ballot by being both nominated and seconded. If you already see it here, then there is no need to mention it again until final voting starts.

The idea behind having a fairly long time for Round 1 is to give people time to order releases from later in the year, to make thoughtful recommendations about worthwhile releases and extras, and to give other people time to check out those recommendations.

Nominations for Best Overall Releases (In order of release date):
Arrow Video’s Lukas Moodysson set and Indicator’s Michael J Murphy set (Crazy these came out on the same day)
Man Marked for Death from Mawi Films (If only for the film itself)
Silent Avant-Garde from Kino (A wonderful compilation of the beginning of the movement on film and acts as true preservation of these old, forgotten and nearly lost films)
Welcome to the Dollhouse from Radiance (A nice little upgrade from the barebones Sony disc)
Martin from Second Sight (A resurrection of a cult Romero hit that just so happens to be really wonderfully designed to boot)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre from Second Sight (The definitive release of a movie with so many of them is hard to do but Second Sight does prove it can happen)
Drowning by Numbers from Severin (I just like having a Greenway on 4K)
From Hollywood to Heaven from Indicator (A massive ode to filmmakers who at first don’t really need it but then as you explore, the more you realize, this is my kind of dogshit. Preserved wonderfully, packaged beautifully and with enough extras to please anyone plus that enormous book is what really seals the deal)
Lost Picture Show from Vinegar Syndrome (None of these films aren’t great but they are all important, that is the model of this release and I respect the hell out of it for that alone but also as a statement for Vinegar Syndrome’s 10th anniversary, just because a film is poor, doesn’t mean the release should be and this proves that completely)
Benny’s Bathtub from Deaf Crocodile (A great charmer of a film with really good animation but on top of that, the extras are loaded including an episode that’s been banned since the late 70s and yes it is as shocking of a kids program as that sounds)

Forgot about Martin! Added that to my own list. I also liked their overall Picnic at Hanging Rock release, Weir's controversial restoration notwithstanding. On the other hand, I found their TCM Limited Edition book and the newly commissioned documentary so bad that I traded it in at Orbit for the standard edition and another title. Ever since, I've tended to buying regular 4ks from Second Sight.

Yeah I got the standard edition because I heard that the book wasn’t completely worth it and the standard price was a lot better, also own the standard edition of Martin so curious if the book for that is better.

A few reminders:

This is the round where we construct the ballot. You should either be nominating things that no one else has or seconding other people's nominations, which will then put those things on the ballot. You should not simply be posting your own top 10 or whatever. (If you do this, I will still check to see if anything you mentioned has been mentioned by someone else, so that it is effectively seconded. But it causes me more work and can be confusing for others.) At the moment, only one thing has made the ballot so far--Martin for "Best Overall Release" which was effectively nominated by TechnicolorAcid and seconded by Finch.

The "Extras" category is for specific extras, not for releases that have a wealth of good extras. Those releases will presumably be contenders for "Best Overall Release." The "Extras" category (or actually, there are a few different categories for different kinds of extras) is apart from that. The point of this nomination process is that there are so many extras and other items people might vote for that it could be difficult to reach a consensus if everyone is allowed to vote for anything they want. Limiting the ballot to only those things that multiple people stand behind makes the consensus achievable. If you feel that the ballot is too light for any given category, by all means, evangelize for your favorites in the hopes that someone else will second them, or seek out things that others have nominated to see if you think they should be seconded.

The Dragons Forever 4K upgrade made last year's ballot (and was awarded "Best 88 Films Release") so is ineligible this year.

Criterion releases are ineligible for the Other Label Awards, as this is Criterion Forum and they have their own awards

I'm guessing we can include all the Lawrence Gordon Clark introductions as a set on Ghost Stories For Christmas 2 ?

I’d like to nominate Cinema’s First Nasty Women (Kino, BD) for BEST LATE DISCOVERY

I would also like to nominate Andrzej Zulawski: Three Films (Eureka, BD) for BEST UPGRADE.

That's fine to combine them. I'll count your mention as a nomination.

This was a 2022 release that made last year's ballot so it's ineligible now.

These were 2022 releases that did not make the ballot so I'll count your nominations for the Best Late Discovery category.

Another note: It's probably best not to edit your posts here to add nominations or seconds, as I might miss them. Instead, simply make a new post

Seconded:

Best release
A Moment of Romance (Radiance)
The Big Gundown (Indicator)

Best upgrade
Angel Face (WAC)
Caged (WAC)
Clash by Night (WAC)

I'll also second Millennium Mambo (Kino), though I suggest we put it in the best overall release category, given that it has a new commentary by K Austin Collins and a short video essay by Adrian Martin and Cristina Lopez (not sure whether that had been published before though).

Edit (sorry): The same goes for Carlito's Way and the Zulawski box. Very impressive sets of extras, so I wouldn't call them "merely" upgrades.

I've added these three titles to the "In Limbo" category. See the first post for more details

Nominated:

Best overall release
Three Films by Ozu (BFI) SECONDED
Run Man Run (Eureka)
The Whip and the Body (88)* SECONDED
The Long Voyage Home (Imprint)** SECONDED

* Wow, I hadn't seen these colours before. I trust they're "correct"...
** Credit where it is due. Like others, I had stopped buying from this label, but here, they put out a not-readily-available film in a fairly up-to-date quality (to my eyes), with the usual fine set of extras, including the commentary bringing Ursini and Silver out of retirement.

Guerre est finie for best release (though I’m still bitter at it being almost $40 with shipping)

I thought the slipcover version on the Vinegar Syndrome site was $28 with $5 shipping. Wouldn’t that only amount to $33 ($31 if you got the standard edition).
