Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7

The scuttlebutt on Criterion, Eclipse, and Janus Films. Lists and polls are STRONGLY discouraged.

'House of Games' just showed up in the upcoming releases section before being quickly taken down.
(all assuming it's actually getting upgraded, of course)

hah, that's 399, and spines 400 and 401 were just updated last month, and 411 Berlin Alexanderplatz a month or two before and 415 Naked Prey last October. Almost as though the print runs from summer-fall 2007 are all running out around the same time. :-p

in the eight months of October 18-May 19, there've been 9 upgrades, and 6 of them are 2007 releases)

(and 412 Sawdust and Tinsel last december, but that one is probably more Bergman box related and independent of the 2007 upgrade trend).

(edit, I went and checked and Naked prey is actually January 2008, oops)

Welp. Just exposed my lack of Fassbinder knowledge.

Strongest line-up in quite a while, imo. Particularly excited for the Wyler and the Mamet.

House of Games and The Heiress are both very exciting additions for me.

Strong line up indeed. A bit worried about House of Games' technical presentation, though.

different strokes, Other than the Varda, not much of interest to me, I may revisit Blue Velvet, and finally get to the Mamet, but otherwise one of their more disappointing months.

I've only seen Blue Velvet and Funny Games, neither of which I have much desire to return to. Funny Games is one of the most unpleasant films I've seen. I'm really interested about the Varda film, and a little about the Wyler. Don't know much about House of Games.

Time to saddle up, put on your boots, and get ready for the Speculation Rodeo (May 2019 Edition)

Blue Velvet - Instagram post confirmation from Criterion office visitor + Unreleased Criterion laserdisc

Funny Games - 2019 New Years clue (board game at table + smiling Jesus & angel) + was on Filmstruck + that unused artwork post

The Heiress - 2019 New Years clue (S balloon)

House of Games - Random upgrade (or New Years clue for whoever insists it was a double clue with Funny Games)

Let the Sunshine In - Oct 2018 newsletter clue

One Sings, the Other Doesn't - 2019 New Years clue + Janus tour
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
246 Blu upgrades remain.

No surprises once again, except for the random upgrade (though I'm sure somebody will argue this was a double clue with the boardgame angel / Jesus). Still quite a few New Years clues to get through, so I won't expect many surprises for awhile still.

Probably for the first time in recorded history: we do not have any outstanding newsletter clues! Unless you think Criterion forgetting January's clue was in itself a clue for something (I'd like to think it was Nothing Lasts Forever). But as it stands, there's no newsletter clues right now.

As Columbus is now spoken for - from Oscilloscope, I'm retroactively declaring Night on Earth to be the winner (unless something even better turns up in 2019).

Time to hit the dusty trail and hope your favorites show up at next month's Rodeo!

Someone mentioned this elsewhere, but last month's newsletter could plausibly be for Clueless. When's the last time they didn't include a clue in their newsletter? 2005? Surely back when they dealt exclusively with wacky animals with the .jpgs labelled wacky_____.

So the skeleton from last year’s was resolved then, right? What was it for?

When there wasn’t a newsletter drawing for January, I went on a long thread in the Criterion Now Facebook group detailing the various January clues.

In 2011 they re-posted the New Year’s drawing in the newsletter, but other than that, they had included drawings in the January newsletters since 2006 (they began in July 2005).

Per my promise - Criterion failed to deliver on Bringing Up Baby / The Thin Man in 2018 announcements. So, I officially declare that skeleton to have been a clue for Dead Man (even though it was already all-but-announced).
Also, I just assume that Criterion was working overtime on all the Criterion Channel stuff, that they must've forgotten about the clue. That or Polan got tired of drawing them.

John Cameron Mitchell slates Hedwig for a June release with a photo from what I'd assume is the filming of an extra: https://www.instagram.com/p/BuFry29gNMC/

"In honor of our upcoming June @criterioncollection Hedwig bluray, a reunion at the former #janestreettheater with #hedwigandtheangryinch filmmakers from left #frankiedarco, #emilyhubley, @stephentrask #miriamshor @pott28 and @miguelvillalobosnyc"
