It doesn't save them money to do a non-standard packaging, but rather the opposite.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol. 7
Picked this up at the sale yesterday, and got the discs out safely and rather easily. Twisting them, they come right off. The nubs are still terrible, sticky, and did begin to flake. The booklet is at higher risk of damage, I think. Mine was sticking a bit to the nubs, but not enough to do damage like the packaging shots on this site. Even if it did tear, Criterion will also replace the book. It’s worth getting now. Just put the discs in a plastic case until you get the replacement.therewillbeblus wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2019 1:17 pmCurrently debating whether to pick this up from B&N after work today and then request the package replacement, or just wait until the packaging updates to purchase. Don't want to damage the discs but also don't want to wait passed the sale to own it. First world problems I know. Anyone had any damage to their discs taking them out just once?

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol. 7
Here is a serious question for you folks: have you ever passed on buying any Criterion release due to it having beyond hideous cover art? I was thinking I wanted to snag Zazie dans le metro finally then I remembered after all these years how (and just speaking for myself here) it is the absolute worst cover art I think they ever approved. Beyond Cluny Brown and Palm Beach Story even.
So I stare at it and try to slightly justify anything about it and I just can't. It's so bad it convinces me that Criterion doesn't care about the film in some aspect and I'm pretty sure even any person on this forum who may claim themselves to be the most artistically unviable could match or even best if given 20 minutes to slack off on MSpaint.
So I let the technical reviews of the disc itself specifically on the mediocre transfer and skimpy extras finally covince me to just pass on the whole package. There is no way I can be fine having that in my collection even though only the spine would be visible on my shelves. First world problems for sure but without being dramatic the cover art for Zazie is mainly the reason I will not buy the criterion release.

I will almost never see the cover, so no. We should really focus on the look of the spines more than we do if we actually care about it on a practical, everyday level

It’s also a great movie and the transfer looks fine. I’m not saying I haven’t hesitated for similar reasons, but how can someone who loves film justify superficial elements superseding artistic merit? Unless you prefer picturesque design to film as an expressive art, which would then make sense.

I do the opposite more often (which is more foolish, maybe), letting excellent packaging convince me to buy something I was hesitant about due to extras or whatever. The most important factor is always the film itself, though.

I never passed on a release because of its cover art.

I always say, I wish I liked the film when it has cover art I really like. But I never indulge.
This seems a little more reasonable then neglecting something because of not liking the cover art....

This came from a customer service email in regards to All About Eve...DarkImbecile wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 5:21 pmI do the opposite more often (which is more foolish, maybe), letting excellent packaging convince me to buy something I was hesitant about due to extras or whatever. Please let us know your shipping address, and as soon as the packaging arrives at our NY office (sometime early next year), we should be able to send you the replacement elements -- digipak with plastic disc holder and matching slipcase.
Once we have the name and address of where to ship, you don't need to do anything else (no return of the old packaging is needed). Just hang in there and we'll alert you once the components are on the way.

I do really appreciate his forum. I'm already rethinking my decision. Sometimes I need a reminder that it is all about the film itself and the more I thought about it throughout today I can't let that cover art stop me from buying a film I love. Admittedly it is still sorta difficult.

If it makes you feel better to create an algorithm, it’s one of the better movies in the collection, so that probably cancels out the cover art, at least this time!

I did a recent rewatch and was just enamored even more by it which led me to realizing I never snagged this and part of that was because I stopped checking on it because I thought it went out of print. Have no idea why I even thought that.therewillbeblus wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 9:32 pmIf it makes you feel better to create an algorithm, it’s one of the better movies in the collection, so that probably cancels out the cover art, at least this time!

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol. 7
Just remembered that I did actually sell off my Criterion of Being John Malkovich and replace it with the Arrow for basically this reason. I think there are negligible differences in the transfer and extras but the Arrow is clearly superior because the front cover doesn't look like my toilet and the back cover isn't littered with second-hand embarrassing ad copyblack&huge wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 4:58 pmHere is a serious question for you folks: have you ever passed on buying any Criterion release due to it having beyond hideous cover art?

Not super crazy about Bamboozled, although I get what it's going for. Other than that, these are all pretty fab.

Gene Tierney on the Leave Her To Heaven cover looks like Anya Taylor-Joy does in my avatar, not that that's a bad thing...

If they took the "reflection" out of the sunglasses, I would find Leave Her to Heaven even more stunning, but it's pretty flawless as is.
