Nice slate. Though I was hoping for Europa Europa or some of the August titles, crossing my fingers for November to have some of those.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
The Devils is easy to miss because it was only released on DVD in the UK in 2012. Hope this means Warner is lessening its grip a little, though I know you can't read much into the channel's temporary licenses. Pumped to finally see it.schellenbergk wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2019 9:37 amI'm particularly looking forward to seeing "The Devils" - which somehow I have missed through the years.

Wasn't it on Filmstruck back in the day in a horrible quality R-rated version?

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
I am under the impression that this is the only one of two versions that Warner Brothers has allowed to escape from it's vaults in a commercial capacity. The other being the X rated cut on the BFI release which includes more graphic footage (The one with all the naked nuns I think?). It sucks that we probably won't get Russell's Director's Cut because WB for whatever reasons is still so unbelievably prickly about this damn movie it's ridiculous.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
Can't speak for the quality of what was run on Filmstruck, but the version of THE DEVILS on the Criterion Channel looks great. It's the R-rated version, apparently, without the notorious "Rape Of Christ" sequence. Still well worth seeing.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
I know it would be hard to tell since Criterion doesn’t list the rating but is it the R rated version or the X rated version on there?
The R rated version I believe was on FilmStruck (or Shudder... one of them) and is heavily edited and is presented in a non-anamorphic print
The X rated version should be better quality as it was released by the BFI and is still missing the Rape of Christ.
The unrated version has the Rape of Christ scene and hasn’t really been released beside screenings.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
I couldn't say exactly which version. It looked great, not looking stretched -- so maybe it was the X version. Whatever it is, go ahead and check it out.kcota17 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 4:24 pmI know it would be hard to tell since Criterion doesn’t list the rating but is it the R rated version or the X rated version on there?

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
So do we have any evidence yet to suggest that Criterion is using the channel to assess what It should release on disc? I've held off on watching some things in the hope that it might get an eventual disc release (titles I'm particularly interested in having), but if this is the case, maybe I should forego that & watch anyway?

There's no reason to believe they use the channel for that purpose.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
I highly doubt it. But even if they were I dont understand your logic here. More views would show a title is popular enough to release it. But again there is no evidence of them doing this even going back to the days on Hulu. Just watch what you want to watch.Lowry_Sam wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 4:42 amSo do we have any evidence yet to suggest that Criterion is using the channel to assess what It should release on disc? I was told that if I wanted better sound I should buy the discs, so there is that.

I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but it should be noted that the image is upscaled standard definition.Roscoe wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 4:33 pmI couldn't say exactly which version. Interesting. Looks like the upscaling on my 4K TV works really well. I didn't notice any of the usual drawbacks of that kind of thing.Roger Ryan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 12:14 pm

One can only hope this means we'll finally get that Criterion release of The Cook, the Thief that's been rumored for over a decade now.
I love all the early Greenaway stuff too - Vertical Features Remake in particular should be more widely seen, and The Falls, of course...

So what happened is that this was an email from Kino - sent to a different address! - about my recent order shipping. Since it was coming from TN via Louisville, I thought it was the Criterion warehouse Thanks for the info, mfunk.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- Film and Content Discussion
Upon returning home from my vacation, I thumb through the mail & see a generic white envelope, but with a Criterion return address & what feels like a very substantial credit card..... could this be a gift card as thanks for my recent order & regrets that it still hasnt shipped yet? No it's a metal membership card for signing up to the channel.
So should I feel deprived now that mine did not come with a "chain-like thing"?Michael Kerpan wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 7:02 pmI got a metal card and some sort of mystifying chain-like thing....
