(Silvio Narizzano, 1966)
Release date: 19 November 2018
Limited Blu-ray Edition (World Blu-ray premiere)

Pre-order here.

One of the defining films of the 1960s, Silvio Narizzano’s adaptation of Margaret Foster’s 1965 novel stars Lynn Redgrave in an Oscar-nominated role as the put-upon teenager Georgy Parkin. Awkward and full of self-doubt, Georgy finds herself forever just outside of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ London life she craves.

Marked by a wonderfully warm and appealing central performance from Redgrave, and with its superb supporting cast including Charlotte Rampling (Death in Venice, The Night Porter), Alan Bates (A Kind of Loving, Women in Love) and the great James Mason (The Reckless Moment, Age of Consent, The Deadly Affair), Georgy Girl captures the spirit of the era – and boasts one of the all-time great film theme tunes.

I was just reading about this film in relation to that year's Oscar ceremony. Though the film is perhaps best remembered from that year's festivities for pitting Redgrave against Redgrave in Best Actress (with Lynn Redgrave facing down her sister for Morgan), it also marked one of the first times that a leading actor willingly consented to being nominated in supporting, which had for decades been considered a category to recognize non-A-listers. James Mason resented being put there so much that he refused to let the studio campaign him for the Pumpkin Eater, where he likely would have received an earlier nom. But he finally relented here and was subsequently nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and became one of the first to break the ice

Best Actress was a very strange line-up that year, because quite aside from the Redgrave sisters there were two foreign-language performances - Anouk Aimée in A Man and a Woman (French) and Ida Kamińska in The Shop on the High Street (Slovak - a first and only!). So it's perhaps no surprise that it went to Elizabeth Taylor (in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf), as the odd one out.

From what I read of their quotes to the press, both Redgraves went into the ceremony fully believing Taylor would win, but they of course may have just said that to deflect the question of what they'd do if their sister won

James Mason thought he was the lead of The Pumpkin Eater? LOL! Am I not getting this? And from what I hear there was a similar situation with Shelley Winters, for Lolita, although I personally don't think she was a lead actor in that either.

Not exactly. He (not inaccurately) considered himself a leading man and while he would take a smaller role, he would not campaign for Best Supporting Actor, which was not seen as a category for A-Listers. Winters, however, did campaign in lead for Lolita and came up empty handed

Mason would certainly qualify as a leading man under most circumstances, but he’s unambiguously a supporting actor in The Pumpkin Eater by any yardstick - relatively brief screen time, relative unimportance as someone not a member of the family at its heart, etc.

Right, and he knew that. But he didn't want to be recognized in the category, so he wouldn't let the studio submit him at all. Also worth noting that Winters learned her lesson too and earned her second Oscar in Supporting not long after Lolita for A Patch of Blue

Everyone knows this but the fantastic title song later got a heartbreaking rendition in the Simpsons!

I found this supremely annoying. The film stands in spirit with A Thousand Clowns (and later movies like Juno), offering a lead kook ostensibly representing a voice of youth and outsiderdom but in a phony way that flatters an older audience looking in from the outside. Like Jason Robards in Coe's film, I quickly tired of Redgrave's own drummer act, and her being surrounded by Alan Bates and Charlotte Rampling all trying to one-up each other in overacting soon became an endurance test. It's hard to know where to place the most blame: Bates is surely the most obnoxious and incessant of the trio, but Rampling's ice queen routine, crescendoing in that flabbergasting maternity ward meltdown, is so absurd that I felt insulted as an audience member. Great British films of youth have survived and thrived with hyperkinetic characters and acting choices (the Knack, Billy Liar), but this is not one of them.

When Glenn Erickson is on form, he's one of the best online critics out there.

And he's very much on form here - in fact, for me, he absolutely nails the film's peculiar power.
