Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
First post updated.
The next update will be the year-end one, at which time I will be doing the following:
1. No longer counting 2015 lists of less than 10, and only partially counting lists of 10 that haven't been updated recently. If you haven't edited your list since at least the last Friday of October and you want it to count as is, then you will need to add a note to your post that indicates this. Lists that I stop counting at year-end can be counted again later if they're subsequently edited to constitute a qualifying top 10.
2. Deleting empty place-holder posts in the 2015 thread that haven't been updated all year. These people are free to contribute a list at some point in the future, but they will lose their spot earlier on in the thread.
3. "Freezing" the results for years 2014 and prior (i.e. any changes during 2016 will be shown as changes from that point in time). 2015 will be frozen at the end of February, after awards season is over.

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
How about counting lists with at least 5? There are still big films I am waiting to see, like REVENANT, CAROL, etc, that have not been released here. I don't want to just add 5 crummy films to fill out the list... that would work against the goal, I feel like.swo17 wrote:First post updated.

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
You can keep your personal list however you want, but if Swo feels it appropriate to collate only those of 10+ then it is equally good.

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
It is crummy to fill out a top ten list with five you don't feel are on par with your first five. I just took a pragmatic approach and selected films that I thought should be higher on the consensus list.

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
It's a dynamic list that I update every 2 weeks. If you're not up to 10 just yet, I'll count your list again once it gets there. Please don't let the existence of this thread alter your behavior in the dynamic top 10 threads.

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
Actually, when people include films on their lists along with some kind of signifier that they don't really feel like they belong on a top 10, I don't count those. It defeats the purpose of the exercise if people are including films on their lists that they don't really like all that much.hearthesilence wrote:It is crummy to fill out a top ten list with five you don't feel are on par with your first five. Thinking about this some more, I know that by the end of February I only want to be counting lists of 10, but I suppose it's kind of arbitrary to be making that change now. It would probably make my life easier to wait until then to stop counting lists of less than 10 (i.e. less lists to have to delete now and then add back later). So how about we call February 28th the end of the year, and I do all the things I listed above at that time instead?

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
That's good to know, I live so far away from a decent cinema I have to wait until home video releases to see anything.swo17 wrote:It's a dynamic list that I update every 2 weeks. Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
I notice that The Assassin is slowly but surely earning fans. This is Hou's face when he drops by to read the lists every couple of weeks.

Yeah, lighten up. Would you rather this place turn into rotten tomatoes, with everyone whipping out the torches and pitchforks because their favorite movie is too far down on the list?

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
Looking over the top films for the last few years, it seems that English language films (often widely released ones) are really starting to push their way up over international releases. Any thoughts on why this is? I'm sure they will always have some advantage in votes like this simply due to ease of access, but while 2012 and earlier had at least two non-English films in the top 5, while the Assassin is the only one to crack the top 5 in the last three years. Is American cinema getting better relative to the rest of the world, or are there other factors at play?

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
I'd be surprised if films like Police, Adj. or Uncle Boonmee... were as high on their respective lists as of January of the following year; it seems to take a while for films that didn't secure releases outside of NY and LA in the States to become widely seen in the hinterlands, and I'm sure the same is true for other countries as well. For example, some of the biggest gainers on the 2014 list are Force Majeure, Jauja, and Nymphomaniac.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Carol's the one with the major momentum.

About two weeks from the final count? I'm getting my Hou reaction JPEGs ready...

Re: Dynamic Consensus Lists
This is a dynamic thread--there is no final count. All that happens in two weeks is I stop counting any 2015 list that isn't a top 10 updated toward the end of the year, which could shake up the rankings a little.

Ah, I see. In this case, maybe I will see if I can go tip the scales in some previous years.

First post updated. Take a good look at all of the colored statistics for 2015 and prior, because next update I'm clearing the slate.

I'm pretty sure Hou Hsiao-Hsien doesn't like The Assassin as much as you do at this point.
