Re: Announcements, Speculation & Wild, Irresponsible Conject
I can't seem to find an answer to this, even though I have a strong feeling that it has been discussed before:
Why did Arrow Video abandon the Limited Slipcase Editions, the ones with a poster and 4 different covers and the transparent window?

Because they were horrible?

They were expensive as hell to produce.

I had a feeling it might've been the expensive nature of the editions. I hope the "horrible" comment was a joke. What's not to love about getting a booklet, a poster, and four different cover arts. The only downside if any that I have found so far, is that the slipcase can look a bit beat-up if not taken good care of.tenia wrote:They were expensive as hell to produce.
Anyhow, I do like the uniformity, although I also appreciate the current individuality of the Limited Editions.
Thank you for the quick answer Tenia.

Re: Announcements, Speculation & Wild, Irresponsible Conject
Well, some people really felt it was harmonising the movies into a bland layout that wasn't always adequate. And if you wanted to throw it away, it meant not having the backcover with the details and specs anymore, so it wasn't very practical either.
I don't dislike the uniformity of them myself, but it's true I would prefer that money to be spent elsewhere, which is what Arrow chose to do.
This being written, I liked the inclusion of the posters, and I prefered having 4 artworks choice than 2, but I don't miss these.

Re: Announcements, Speculation & Wild, Irresponsible Conject
I have a few of the early Academy titles with slipboxes ("windowboxes") and hate them. A few of the spines are tattered just from the usual amount of handling (and one or two have arrived like that). I fear it's down to the card stock used, in conjunction with the structure of the packaging.
I actually emailed Arrow a while ago to ask if there was any way of getting the inlays for the reissues of those early Academy titles so I could throw away the slipboxes, but they didn't reply so I assume they weren't willing to help me out.
Anyway, in my eyes it wasn't worth it and I'd much rather have standard Amarays with a few slipcovers (O-rings) for some LE titles, and hard slipboxes where necessary (e.g. The Hills Have Eyes). I'm not fussed about 4 design options, but would like more posters or art cards - for example, I hope their upcoming release of The Thing has a poster included. Fran Simeoni tweeted yesterday about the artwork being "bad ass", and I assume they'd put the classic Drew Struzan design on the reverse.

More looks at the Ludwig box from Anthony Nield's Twitter - here is the cover with no belly band (which looks incredibly spiffy), here are the two amaray cases. The choice of using different art styles for each amaray will probably provoke opinion but all-in-alll it's a real nice looking set.

Credit where it's due - our very own Peerpee was the mastermind behind the Ludwig packaging.

Belly band. Should've have known it was Peerpee's doing! Gorgeous design.

The Ludwig booklet looks like it could be at least 60 pages long. Is there any more information about the set that we aren't aware of?

How did Ludwig get away with not having the rating on the cover?

Re: Arrow Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
I'm not sure, but the rating is on the back of the yellow belly band around the set. Maybe that was enough.

Re: Arrow Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
BBFC relaxed their rules recently - end of last year I think - and Arrow apparently will now do without certificates on the spine on all releases. I thought they'd still have to print one on the front though, even if it was just on the belly band, but maybe things are even more relaxed now? They'll have been following guidelines so perhaps just one on the back was enough.

Re: Arrow Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
I'm sure peepee is thrilled, as the 'big, ugly BBFC logo obscuring the artwork' was one of his big bugbears during his Masters of Cinema-posting days. I'm back and forth on it myself, sometimes it looks shoehorned in but on the other hand I quite like Dogwoof's cover of O.J.: Made In America having a big, red warning '18' label flashing on the front of it, contrasting well with the stark black and white imagery (and red, white and blue title treatment) of the cover itself!
That rule change would probably explain why Criterion has been able to keep their UK spines the same as the US ones too, despite having the BBFC logos on the front and back cover (and the disc itself)

Can someone please tell me these are good films because I want to buy this set on the basis of design alone.

Re: Arrow Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
That artwork is so good I may have to get it sooner than I was planning to! Could even rival MoC's Late Mizoguchi as best UK design for a Japanese box set...
As for the films themselves, they do look more obscure than Suzuki's 60's Nikkatsu stuff - probably why they're Arrow Academy rather than Arrow Video - but must be pretty stunning as he won some big awards for them.
There are trailers on YouTube if you want to gauge the tone (closer to Yoshida than Kobayashi, from what I can tell).
