Before I looked it up, I had no idea that rutabaga was just a synonym for swede.

Or that neeps were the same thing.

Anyway, the best thing to some out of all this is my discovery of Wikipaedia, the free encyclopaedia that awbody can eedit - the Scottish Wikipedia. Here is its opening paragraph on 'Neep':

"A neep or tumshie is the ruit crap brassica rapa var. rapa that's aft growen in maumie climates athort the warld for its white, bulbous tapruit. Smaw, neshy kynds is growen for human consumption, while lairger kynds is growen as feed for stock. You definitely don't want to be that guy walking around foisting the word 'zucchino' on unsuspecting citizens.

Yeah, "neeps and tatties".

Didn't know there was a Scottish Wikipedia though, amazing. Almost worth highjacking the thread for that alone!

Can't wait to see the confusion on a shopkeeper's face when I ask for a pack of fags.

Slack Bay is getting a Blu Ray release in the UK so that is the way to go for me.

I received and watched my Blu Ray of A Quiet Passion. Had seen it at the cinema last November and was blown away by it. Second viewing: same response. Outstanding job for Soda with A Quiet Passion and it's extras.

Thank you very much Aunt Peg, lovely to hear. Just to clarify in case anyone gets the wrong idea from your post, Slack Bay is being released over here by New Wave, not us.

Having just signed it off, here's the extras for My Life As A Courgette:
- Both the original French and dubbed English versions, with audio description and HOH subtitle options for the latter
- Introduction by Peter Lord (Aardman Films) (4 mins)
- The Making Of My Life As A Courgette (18 mins)
- Courgette "Audition" footage (pilot for the film, 2 mins)
- Courgette, You're A Star (courtesy of the Gan Foundation for Cinema, 5 mins)
- Festival d'Annecy (courtesy of the Gan Foundation for Cinema, 2 mins)
- Into Film Animation Workshop (4 mins)
- Theatrical trailers (2 mins each)
- Also available on DVD from Thunderbird Releasing (trailer reel of other recent family titles)

I just watched the R1 GKIDS DVD, which included one of Barras's charming early shorts as an extra. It looks like he's made a number of them actually, so it's a shame if none can be represented here, in what otherwise appears to be a great release.

Believe me, I tried and we very nearly got to include that short (Genie In A Tin Of Ravioli). We started talking to the producer/licensor, who then promptly disappeared without trace to work as an animator on Isle Of Dogs and didn't get back to us again until a month after I signed off the master. So very little we could do about that, alas. Barras' other shorts are wonderful but contain some macabre imagery that could have jeopardised our PG certificate, which we wanted to keep.

On a related note, I can happily confirm that our upcoming Blu-Ray of Hannes Holm's Oscar-nominated A Man Called Ove will contain all the extras from the Music Box release, so local audiences won't miss out.

Interesting about the rating considering the feature is the equivalent of 12 here, presumably on account of all the talk of sex and murdered parents.

Sex and murdered parents is fine in British PG films, provided nobody swears.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that the BBFC were very happy to be able to give it a PG due to its sensitive and discreet handling of the issues involved - prior to their viewing it though, we were very worried they'd follow the MPAA's example!

They also say pressurize instead of pressure (which isn't as weird as the Canadian differentiation between -er and -re).

I do quite a lot of hiking / peakbagging - which involves lists of places to try and summit. There's a British list of peaks that they call Marilyns - which I always thought was some Celtic terminology or some other ancient name for hills....

But it turns out there's Marilyns and there's also Munros.... and I guess its in the same vein as French explorers calling a US mountain range: the Grand Tetons. This is what you get when you let men name shit.

Edit, there's a whole wikipedia page on the subject. I understand the spirituality in most situations (Goddess / Mother), but that still doesn't help the Marilyn case.

If no-one minds me dragging this thread kicking and screaming back on topic...

Benedict Andrews’ controversial drama Una, starring Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn, was released on Blu-Ray on Monday, featuring bonus interviews with Andrews and Mendelsohn.

Martin Koolhoven’s gory Western Brimstone, starring Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce, Kit Harrington and Clarice Van Houten, comes out on Blu-Ray on February 19th. Bonus features includes cast and crew interviews, deleted and extended scenes, and the only worldwide Blu-Ray release (as far as I’m aware) of the film’s original 7.1 surround track.

Our Blu-Ray release of Joachim Trier’s Thelma is out on February 26th and includes interviews with Trier and Eili Harboe, as well as five short behind-the-scenes videos.

Lest anyone think we don’t just release films on DVD anymore, specialist highlights include Erik Poppe’s historical wartime drama The King’s Choice (out next Monday), Asif Kapadia’s epic romance Ali & Nino on March 5th, Pat Collins' stark music biopic Song Of Granite on April 2nd, and Cumberbatch-narrated ‘mindfulness’ doc Walk With Me on April 30th. Plus a lot of DTV genre stuff I’m not sure would necessarily appeal to anyone on here, with the possible exception of Lu Yang’s wuxia prequel Brotherhood Of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield, out on DVD February 12th.

Which was the dominate name for it in the US too until 40 or so years ago! Both share the same etymology anyway.

I would be, as I often get sent these for review in my column in Black Static.

Look forward to seeing this, and this reminds me I still need to pick up Louder Than Bombs. I can't remember if I asked if you've ever considered upgrading Oslo August 31st?

Whilst I'm here, I'm looking forward to Sweet Country being released. You plan on putting that on Blu-ray, or just DVD?

I found out the other day 'you lot' call chickpeas "garbanzo beans", which sounds like a joke from The Simpsons.

We use both, generally, though garbanzo is falling out of favor thanks to hummus companies.

Black Static is geared more towards horror titles, isn't it? The ones we're releasing in the next couple of months are predominantly action films, but we do have more horror titles coming up in the spring. Are you receiving screeners from us already? If not, PM me and I'll see if I can sort that out.

We did discuss upgrading Oslo August 31st leading up to the theatrical release of Thelma but unfortunately have no plans for the time being. As for Sweet Country, a Blu-Ray is likely but not confirmed yet; hopefully we should know by the time it comes out in cinemas in March.

Faulty subs on Soda Blu-rays (UK)?

#224 Post by Marwood » Mon Jan 15, 2018 5:23 pm

Am watching the UK Blu-ray of Bullhead now and the English subtitles are really erratic. The vast majority of subtitles stay on the screen far to short, and some times they just flash for a second, not all long enough to read them.

I encountered the same problem on their Blu-ray of Christian Petzold’s Phoenix. I see that Svet’s review of the latter does not mention any problems. Can anyone verify the same issue on their discs of any of these two films?

My player is an Oppo BDP-93 btw. Could it be a known issue with my player? I should add I have not experienced such problems on this player on non-Soda titles.

Thanks

Those issues are news to me but I haven't seen either disc for a long time now - have PM'ed you to discuss further.
