The first time I saw it, I was overwhelmed and many scenes left me with goosebumps. I can't wait to re-experience it through this new restoration!

It's still early in the year, but this might be the best news of 2019 IMO: the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is hosting a Jia Zhangke retro this month and Janus is listed as the rightsholder for Xiao Wu, Platform, Unknown Pleasures, and The World.

Also of note: 24 City has a blurb credited to The Criterion Collection, despite the film never having received a release from Criterion. I dunno if this means the movie will be getting a release; the film's rights holder isn't listed on SFMoMA, but if Janus/Criterion has worked with Cinema Guild in the past then it could happen.

I think the attribution to Criterion for the 24 City synopsis is just a mistake. The same blurb is on the IFC Center page for the film, and that dates back to the original U.S. run in 2009. I also don't read anything into the fact that they only specify Cinema Guild as the print source and not as the rightsholder, since they similarly don't specify Janus as the rightsholder on A Touch of Zen, Kino Lorber on A Touch of Sin, Cohen on Ash Is Purest White, etc.—it looks like they only specify a rightsholder when it's a different entity than the print source.

I was at a screening of the new restoration of Detour at the Winnipeg Cinematheque which was followed by a Skype call with Ben Crossley-Marra from Janus Films. He was asked to give a teaser for upcoming Janus projects and he said that Januswas working with Wong Kar-wai to restore all his films in 4K and also a “huge restrospective” of Abba Kiasrostami’s work (I believe he was hinting towards something like the Bergman Centennial restrospective). Both should be coming in 2020.

Woah, did he actually say that ALL of WKW's films is going to recieve a new restoration? Also, Janus announced the Kiarostami Retrospective back in January.

I wonder how WKW's films are going to be released? He's still on the scene, so a retrospective wouldn't make much sense.

Doesn't Miramax have the rights to 'The Grandmaster'?

He did say all of his films. Mentioned something about a delay in the project too which I would guess is probably related to getting all the rights together.

I forgot that the Kiarostami retrospective was already announced. I think he was talking about its home video release in that case.

Though I would very much like to see all WKW films in the collection, but I am not holding my breath since we were promised almost all of Almodovar (who I also like) a few years back and how much we've seen so far? Only 2!

Yeah—considering the sheer volume of films they apparently have in the pipeline from Harold Lloyd, Almodovar, Wenders, Kiarostami, Ray, Wong, etc., it does seem like they’re releasing them at a trickle.

I know it's unreasonable to expect multiple Bergman-style sets, but hopefully they'll at least take a cue from some of the UK labels and increase the number of (smaller-scale) boxsets they're releasing. Otherwise we’ll be waiting a loooong time to get all those films.

Janus to tour 'Paris is Burning' later this summer

P.S. I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but all of the Agnes Varda films and most of the films from the Late Ozu eclipse set are now available to be shown in theaters in DCP format on the Janus website. Are upgrades a possibility?

Film Forum has a page up for the NYC opening. Didn't say anything about Janus Films; I was under the impression Miramax still controlled the rights to it.
