In the filmmakers forum look at the Jacques Rivette thread. The latest 2-3 pages covers this issue. Without any attempt at some color correction, I would have to pass on this release. It's just too compromised.justeleblanc wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2019 10:30 amWhat's this about? From the trailer the colors look historically accurate. Are they not?I'll be curious to know whether Kino has plans to make any changes to the color timing.

The Landlord (1970) with optional English subtitles
• Brand New 2K Restoration
• The Racial Gap - New interview with star Beau Bridges
• Reflections - New interview with star Lee Grant
• Norman Jewison and Hal Ashby - Style and Substance: New interview with producer Norman Jewison

Legendary filmmaker Hal Ashby (Coming Home, 8 Million Ways to Die) makes his directing debut with this acclaimed social satire starring Beau Bridges (The Hotel New Hampshire) as a wealthy young man who leaves his family’s estate in Long Island to pursue love and happiness in a Brooklyn ghetto. When Elgar Enders (Bridges) buys a Park Slope tenement, he fully intends to evict the occupants and transform the building into a chic bachelor pad. But after meeting the tenants, Elgar adopts a “love thy neighbor” policy instead: first he falls head-over-heels for a sexy young go-go dancer… then he begins an affair with the sultry, married “Miss Sepia 1957.” Featuring brilliant performances by Lee Grant (The Balcony) in an Oscar-nominated role, Pearl Bailey (Porgy and Bess), Louis Gossett Jr. (The Laughing Policeman), Robert Klein (Hooper), Trish Van Devere (Where’s Poppa?), Hector Elizondo (The Flamingo Kid), Gloria Hendry (Black Belt Jones) and Susan Anspach (The Big Fix), and with a potent script by Bill Gunn (Ganja & Hess) based on the novel by Kristin Hunter (Boss Cat), The Landlord is one of the most original and provocative screen comedies to deal with race relations in urban America. Produced by Norman Jewison (The Thomas Crown Affair) and shot by Gordon Willis (The Godfather).

Von Richthofen and Brown (1971) with optional English subtitles
• Chivalry in Warfare: Corman, Von Richthofen and Brown
• Theatrical Trailer
Color 97 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated PG-13
The sky’s the limit for adventure! Two of history’s most fabled flyboys square off in daring, acrobatic duels of death in Von Richthofen and Brown, a high-flying tale of famous battles and infamous daredevils. Baron Manfred von Richthofen (John Phillip Law, Death Rides a Horse), Germany’s legendary Red Baron, is an aristocratic knight of the skies. But his chivalrous sense of honor doesn’t mean he’s merciful—some eighty pilots have lost their lives to this steel-willed ace of aces. In contrast, Canadian wheat farmer Roy Brown (Don Stroud, Search and Destroy) couldn’t care less about honor. He lives, the enemy dies—in any way Brown can make it happen. So, when these two very different men go head-to-head in a winner-take-all showdown, it’s a swooping, bullet-filled confrontation that puts their skill—and their courage—to the ultimate test. The stellar cast includes Barry Primus (Avalanche), Corin Redgrave (When Eight Bells Toll), Hurd Hatfield (The Picture of Dorian Gray), Stephen McHattie (Jesse Stone: Stone Cold) and Ferdy Mayne (The Fearless Vampire Killers). Wonderfully shot by Michael Reed (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), with a screenplay by Joyce Hooper Corrington (The Omega Man) and John William Corrington (Boxcar Bertha). Top-notch direction by legendary filmmaker Roger Corman (The Secret Invasion, Target: Harry, Tales of Terror).

The StudioCanal titles Kind Hearts and Coronets and Billy Liar are on the Kanopy streaming service with Kino Lorber branding too (sorry, if these were already confirmed), as well as the never-released-by-Criterion The Man in the White Suit.

Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, The Lookout, Looper) is a high school loner, someone who knows all the angles but has chosen to stay on the outside. When the girl he loves turns up dead, he is determined to find the “who” and “why” and plunges into the dark and dangerous social strata of rich girl Laura (Nora Zehetner, Beneath), intimidating Tugger (Noah Fleiss, Joe the King), drug-addled Dode (Noah Segan, Deadgirl), seductive Kara (Meagan Good, D.E.B.S.), and the ominous Pin (Lukas Haas, Witness). But who can he really trust? These are the ingredients of Brick, a gritty and provocative thriller co-starring Richard Roundtree (Shaft). Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) wrote and directed this clever and twist-filled neo-noir that wowed audiences and critics alike.

That's unfortunate. The current UK BD uses a quite visibly dated master (which is certainly the only one available), which looks smooth and with ringing, so most likely both degrained AND sharpened. A new master would most certainly at least improve upon that.

Relying on Universal to provide a good transfer is bush league— they are the kings of grain “management” and smoothness filters. Also the arrogance of KL’s response, when they’ve commissioned plenty of extras for other titles, is striking

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
Kino is now racking up a good number of Buñuel titles (including Death in the Garden and Los Olvidados) without a single physical release so far. As much as I want all of the SC titles to go back to Criterion, if KL is prepping a box set I’d be down for that.
