Re: A '40s vote
It was a tie between They Live by Night and Kind Hearts and Coronets, so I changed my vote from the former, giving us our winner: Kind Hearts and Coronets

DarkImbecile presents: An Arrow Vote
DarkImbecile has been doing some much needed work on the Arrow subforums these last weeks, so who better to select five Arrow titles for your voting pleasure.

Re: DarkImbecile presents: An Arrow Vote
I’ve somehow seen all of these except Basket Case, and I voted for Motel Hell. Early results are grim though: Could there be a more Zzzzzzzz choice for this board when offered a smorgasbord of entertaining trash than to just go for Argento, which was never in any danger of being under-discussed?

Re: DarkImbecile presents: An Arrow Vote
I've seen all of them, and I have 4 of them on Arrow BD. I had not yet upgraded Basket Case, and its 2 sequels, but this poll prompted me to do a price search, and I noticed that hive.co.uk have the UK Second Sight Blu-ray trilogy (standard case) for only £10.69 delivered. Ordered, of course. Who said polls were a waste of time?!!! I voted for Society, BTW.

Re: DarkImbecile presents: An Arrow Vote
I've only seen Deep Red, which I didn't much like (haven't yet liked any Giallo [also haven't seen many] with Suspiria being the only one I found just decent), so I voted for Society which I heard is great

Re: DarkImbecile presents: An Arrow Vote
I also voted for Society (though I'd be happy with Motel Hell pulling it out too, since I talked some shit about it sight unseen in its dedicated thread), and I strongly urge anyone who hasn't seen or heard of any of these to watch the trailers before voting too quickly:
Basket Case
Deep Red
Demons 2
Motel Hell
Society
These are all also pretty easily available via streaming even if you don't own the eventual winner, so it should be easy for plenty to join in for what promises to be an unusually gore-soaked Film Club discussion.

Society is a movie that sounds a lot better in theory than it is in reality. Lots of typical 80s horror nonsense— like a lot of 80s horror movies, you could probably get the same level of enjoyment out of just watching the trailer

For those on the fence, here’s Ebert’s legendary defense of Motel Hell. He also chose it for one of the “Guilty Pleasures” episodes of Siskel & Ebert, though I couldn’t find the clip online

Re: DarkImbecile presents: An Arrow Vote
For me Society is a bit like They Live. Both have enormous cult following because of the social critique high concept, but neither has that much anything else going for them.domino harvey wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2019 1:08 pmSociety is a movie that sounds a lot better in theory than it is in reality. Re: DarkImbecile presents: An Arrow Vote
Some do love enough that fistfight scene in They Live to make it looks like the whole movie is thrilling (which it isn't), while the Society finale gorefest seems to serve the same purpose.
I do agree though that both end up very disappointing and quite shallow.

Kings of the Road for me, although I've always had a soft spot for Rumble Fish

Darn. Was exited to have an excuse to finally watch The Great Beauty. But Wenders will do.

Won't have time to watch the others, but u recently rewatched the Wenders in theater and it's one of his best, so Kings of the Road it is

It's a Chabrol vote!
To coincide with the current Chabrol Auteur List project, domino harvey has kindly curated 5 Chabrol titles.
Le fauteuil hanté has no commercial release, if you want to factor that into your vote.

Re: It's a Chabrol vote!
I chose five worthy Chabrol films that have been overlooked / less discussed on the board. As Sausage mentions, only one is impossible to see commercially with English subs. The other four are readily available:
Au coeur du mensonge: Blu-Ray/DVD/Streaming from Cohen (as the Color of Lies)
L’Enfer: Blu-ray/DVD/Streaming from Cohen (as Torment)
Les innocents aux mains sales: DVD from Pathfinder (as Innocents With Dirty Hands)
Que la bête meure!: DVD from Pathfinder (as This Man Must Die)

The Beast Must Die is my favorite of that lot, but I voted for L'enfer because I'm planning on watching it this week anyway.

Re: It's a Chabrol vote!
All of these are great, though I haven't seen Le fauteuil hanté, which would get my vote if I knew of a way. I already posted about Que la bête meure! so I'll also go with L'enfer, which recently skyrocketed in my esteem on a rewatch due to viewing it in a completely different light.
