Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Sorry that I’ve only now come back to check the thread. I’ve been busy with my coven.
Seriously, my Häxan guess—still not confirmed—has caused more hysteria than it deserves. It was mostly luck, and my choices are really haphazard this month. The Godzilla release was my only certainty. As soon as I heard that Janus was touring Godzilla movies and did the math, I knew that there’d probably be a collection of Godzilla films ready for October. (My thanks to Shrew for his efforts that confirm Criterion’s practice of themed horror/ghost films around Halloween.) Given my belief in themes, I thought there’d be another release that would fit the horror-ghost-monster theme, but I almost never watch scary movies, so I had no idea of titles that might be brought into the collection. The alternative was to look into upgrades that fit the bill. So I started going through the list alphabetically. I found Devil and Daniel Webster and when I came to Häxan, something in the back of my mind recalled that it had played in New York not so long ago. Even so, I balked at first because it would mean two silent films in consecutive months, and three silents in one year! That's unheard-of, unless it's a box set. But I didn’t have the time to look any further (or I might have arrived at The Vanishing).
All my other guesses were cribbed from what other folks were already guessing in the thread.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I don't think The Grand Budapest Hotel is a strong candidate for #1000 because of how great a film it is anyway, I think it's a strong candidate because of the close relationship between the label and the director, and the history of saving nice tidy numbers for him (although not all the time, so it very well might not be that). It's just something that we know is coming eventually and that would make sense considering how tight the two parties are and how much history they have together.
If you're asking me today, I think it's just gonna be the Godzilla set.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I think Budapest not being a divisible-by-five spine comes from Kline seemingly genuinely not knowing---since there's such a a history of saving numbers, he'd surely know if it was locked-in for Anderson.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Is there really "such a history of saving numbers"? Or has that only demonstrably occurred two or three times, and other supposed cases have been mere speculation?

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Yeah, multiple Wes Anderson spines have just randomly fallen on neat numbers. And Bressonaire is just guessing

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Someone would have to jog my memory, but wasn't The Life Aquatic released a few months before Criterion reached #300 chronologically?

65
167
300
450
540
700
776
Not very consistent with this "neat numbers" thing, are they? If they are indeed "saving numbers" I would expect this to look less like coincidental happenstance.
edit: and again, I did allow for the fact that it's legitimately occurred a few times... I can certainly imagine they deliberately gave Anderson "neat" numbers 300 and 700 for their special relationship with him (and could indeed be saving #1000 for him). And no one could deny the aptness of 666. I just thought "such a history" was overstating it.

Yes, that was my point. I like the film, and some of you need to chill with aspersions directed at me in generalOmensetter wrote: ↑Wed Jul 17, 2019 2:13 pmI think Budapest not being a divisible-by-five spine comes from Kline seemingly genuinely not knowing---since there's such a a history of saving numbers, he'd surely know if it was locked-in for Anderson.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
You just shared 7 examples, more than half of which (either 4 or 5 of them depending on how you see it) are applicable, and then called it a coincidental occurrence.
Who cast an aspersion at you? Genuinely asking as I haven't seen one in heredomino harvey wrote: ↑Wed Jul 17, 2019 3:11 pmYes, that was my point. Brian C saying I have an issue with the film. I went back to edit it out but mfunk commented on it too soon— it’s not really worth going into and I shouldn’t have said anything to begin with, so let’s not go any additional rounds and I’ll assume the comment was made in better faith than it seemed

Oh - I thought he was just pointing out that he thought it was the intention behind your post, i.e. that you made a joke about the quality of the film, which hadn't crossed my mind. Not sure if you care about my opinion on the post, but I don't think he was casting aspersions at you at all
EDIT: Sorry Dom, I had been responding to something else at the same time you posted and just added my inquiry in really quickly as your post was thrust upon me before I could finalize mine.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
What makes any of these numbers besides 300 and 700 "neat"? Note that being divisible by 10 or 5 is not especially neat.mfunk9786 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 17, 2019 3:12 pmYou just shared 7 examples, more than half of which (either 4 or 5 of them depending on how you see it) are applicable, and then called it a coincidental occurrence.
I suppose 776 could be neat if it was, say, the movie 1776. But it isn't.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
FYI the chance of 2 out of 7 spines just randomly falling on numbers that are divisible by 100 is about 0.2%, and the chance of 3 falling on numbers that are divisible by 50 is about 0.02%

"Film Twitter" as a genre tends towards the histrionic regardless of the subject.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I appreciate that, and no worries. I’ve expressed way too many opinions here for me to ever expect anyone to know them all, and I can see how my post may have given that impression since it wasn’t clear to several people I was referring to him (seemingly) confirming the spine number wasn’t punnily tied to the release

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I shudder at the idea of "Film Twitter" having any influence on Criterion. Twitter is wonderful for many things, opinions on movies or television is not one of them.
