Just watched Sherlock Jr. from the Cohen Keaton vol. 2. It looked absolutely marvelous and the new orchestral score by Timothy Brock was lovely and engaging and was also subtler and avoiding some of the cute gimmicks of the Mont Alto score from the Kino.

I also checked out the "new" supplements, hoping Cohen had heard the cry for more after the barebones volume 1. Alas, both are about 4 minute long excerpts of talking heads from the Bogdanovich film, edited in such a way that some of the clips are just soundbites without enough context to make them meaningful, and ending with an ad for the Cohen blu-ray of that film. They're more glorified publicity ads for the documentary than meaningful supplements for the films, so I'd say the Kinos are still worth hanging onto for their fairly loaded supplements, but the Cohens are worth grabbing for the restorations and scores.

Yeah, I didn't even look at the supplements because from the back cover copy I assumed it was more of the same, but I was totally delighted by Sherlock Jr. again and can't wait to revisit The Navigator tonight. I'm also glad that Seven Chances is next because it's my favorite. I actually have never seen Battling Butler and sort of forgot it existed; in fact Our Hospitality, which I'm sure will anchor Cohen's Vol. 4, is the only remaining Keaton feature I've seen in the presumptive lineup. (I've seen all the shorts but my knowledge of the features kind of ends with the heavy hitters.)

Numerous previously OOP Cohen titles are popping back up in stock at Amazon-- I think there's been a massive repressing of their back catalog

Awesome and thanks for the heads up domino. I’ve been kicking myself for missing that Jamaica Inn release but it looks to be one of the ones coming back in stock.

I received the Keaton Collection, Vol. 3 w/ Seven Chances and Battling Butler, and it looks great! No trailers or ads appear to have been included that indicate whether a Vol. 4 w/ Our Hospitality and the restored shorts are on the horizon or not...

Agree with the above post. Presentation-wise, these Keaton discs continue to be impeccable, and I appreciate the restoration notes at the outset of each film. Seven Chances is my favorite Keaton feature, and Battling Butler — which is new to me — was a delight. It’s really stunning that films of this vintage can be made to look this good, especially given how much damage they’ve been screened with over the years. (Some flaws remain in Butler but they’re evident for very little of the runtime.) I’m also curious if Cohen tackles the shorts but even if they don’t, this series has already been a gift and a bargain.

Blu-Ray.com somehow claims it’s skewed blue.

Visually it looks far from perfect colour wise but I'll take it over the wretched DVD.

I mean, I’m pretty much used to it at this point. I’m not giving up Muriel or L’argent or whatever, so it just really do be like that sometimes

Not sure if Ritrovata (the yellow white balance looks like their LUT) or Eclair (the white clothes looking blue are usually their signature), but in any case, yup, that's another LUT-homogenised restoration.

Maybe it's the new Ritrovata-Eclair super-LUT that combines the best of both worlds?

Joke aside, I've seen movies graded by Ritrovata that looked Eclair-teal, and Eclair stuff looking Ritrovata-yellow. Not sure why or how, but I guess that within the thousands possible LUTs, they somehow ended up using extremely close ones.

Good for Cohen releasing such a long film on disc, though this kind of news just reminds me that the (even shorter) La flor isn't getting one stateside at this point, and putting it next to a Mark Cousins film isn't going to make anyone optimistic about the justice behind what gets released vs. what doesn't

Bold move. I hope The Story of Film is next. Though a new narration is impossible.

The Blu-ray of the 4K restoration of Pandora and the Flying Dutchman is coming out on April 21. The Living Idol is included as a bonus on the 2nd disc
Thanks. That’s an easy double dip for me...I’ve been dying to see The Living Idol despite Susan Felleman telling me it’s better if I don’t.

Amazon Prime has two versions of Tavernier's documentary on French cinema. One is called "My Journey through French Cinema", which is 192 minutes long. The other is called "Journeys through French Cinema", which is the longer version in 8 parts. Of these, Cohen has issued the first as a Blu Ray disc. Does anyone know if they intend to issue the longer version in the physical format?

Cohen also furloughed most of his cinema employees even though he makes more than enough money to pay their salaries for decades. Billionaires are pieces of shit, even cinephilic billionaires.
