Liked Pitt's reference to the sham trial.

All the praise for Bong Joon Ho and Parasite winning Best Picture and Best International Picture makes me wonder if I missed something when I saw the film and ended up not liking it by a substantial margin compared to his other films of which I love Mother, Memories of Murder and The Host. Perhaps they'll give Tarantino a Lifetime Achievement Oscar.
I’m mostly with you, I liked it but don’t get the obsession. Still, so much better than the alternative and a really inspiring thing to see, especially breaking ground for the ceremony and giving some hope to the voting methods

Believe me, I'm grateful 1917 got locked out. The only thing annoying me is Parasite getting both oscars for best and best international picture when they could (and IMO should) have given best international to Pain & Glory.

I think I won? Somebody point out my errors and disabuse me of this notion:

Shit I thought I was doing really poorly but 18/24 and a non-winning tie? I'm happy with that.

They should make a new rule where if a foreign or animated film takes both best picture and the other category, the 2nd place film wins the other category

They can't do that right? It would let the cat out of the bag.

I’m in full agreement on Almodovar winning there

That's pretty much what happens at Cannes every year and it's actually a fun guessing game to play. I'd be all for it anyway, it seems a bit superfluous for a movie to win both BP and Foreign BP, as if there were 9 movies nominated but really, it's all about this one.

If the Almodóvar had won Best Foreign this year, it could have just as easily been an upset as a tell

Among the records set by Parasite tonight, Bong now ties Walt Disney with most Oscar wins in a single ceremony (4)
Parasite is also the first Palme winner since Marty to win Best Picture at the Oscars

I can't decide if it's more impressive that Bong won four for one film or that Disney won four for four!

Entirely different ball game. There's no campaign at Cannes. It is 9 people. With lots of horse trading during deliberations. Very compressed time frame. Basically 24 hours after films finish screening you have the awards.

Oscars is far long and much more regimented.

I see zero problem in the same film winning Best International Film and Best Film.

My dream would actually be the elimination of Best International Film when foreign language films become the routine rather than the exception in the Best Film category.

Still major kudos to the Academy for taking the plunge this year. This should get them enormous PR boost.

PS: Isn't there some debate about whether Bong won 4? I think he won 3, no? South Korea won the Best International Film oscar which Bong accepted on the country's behalf.

I don't have a problem with it winning both either, it's just that best picture makes best foreign redundant. It's cool that it helped Bong get to four, and it'll make for an easy Trivial Pursuit question some day, but otherwise it's a completely meaningless win now

You know, I was wondering that myself since the 70s and 90s US winners of the Palme D'Ors didn't win BP (and the Artist didn't win the Palme either).

Huh. Did Disney win four in one year for a couple (three?) shorts and music categories

Late to the game, but Bong's speech for Best Director was one of the classiest things I've seen in a while.

What do we think the odds are on Parasite winning BP?
100%.

Honesty, I had 1917 winning BP and director (my "who would win" not "who should win") and was clearly wrong. I'd love to be privvy to the actual distribution of votes and whether Parasite received the majority of 1st place votes or just a plethora of 2nd place ones.

Kudos to the Academy for finally recognizing a “foreign/international film” as BP. My wife and I were a bit saddened to see that Parasite took this honor as the first movie to ever do so, but I guess we ignorant US Americans can find out what a "subtitle" is now that it's 2020.

FYI, I'm not trying to provide a revisionist's history, half of my comments are clearly jokes. That being said, I wish I were aware of this thread earlier (I've been away from the forum for a while) since I love guesswork and doing polls. Also, my "who should win" BP was Parasite simply because I think it was the best movie out of the 9 nominees. There's no denying Bong's technical movie-making process. However, there were better movies from 2019, namely Uncut Gems, Pain and Glory, etc.

I'm clearly inept since my daughter is still chastising me for not getting "Animated Feature" right.

(BTW, I hate it when someone double....um, triple posts.)
